Opel is bringing a new, old friend onto the market this year. Electric, of course, and particularly nice to look at as an SUV. It’s not just Opel fans who know the name Frontera well.

It was the beginning of the 1990s Opel is a real driver of innovation. When many car manufacturers were still dreaming of SUVs and off-road vehicles in their portfolios, the Rüsselsheim-based company brought the Frontera into its own product range. The Opel Frontera was initially not intended for the European market, but primarily for the Asian market, where it was offered as the Isuzu Wizard under the management of General Motors. Other important markets were Great Britain and Australia. The three-door Frontera Sport was positioned as an inexpensive entry-level version. In 1991 the Isuzu came onto the market in Europe as the Opel Frontera; produced in Luton, UK. It was discontinued in the mid-2000s and replaced by the Antara, which also had an Asian flavor.

Now the Frontera is returning – again as an SUV and again under the Opel Blitz. “The name Frontera fits our completely new, exciting SUV perfectly. The new model will have a self-confident character and will be positioned at the center of the market,” says Opel CEO Florian Huettl. While there were only diesel and gasoline engines back then, the Frontera is now primarily offered as an electric model and is scheduled to hit the market in the fall as the little brother of the new Opel Grandland.
