New in the Miniatur Wunderland: Rio de Janeiro becomes a district of Hamburg

Apart from Corona, Lockdown and months of closure, the Miniatur Wunderland (MiWuLa) had a big problem: In the previous premises in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt there was no more space for other new country worlds. Therefore, another exhibition space was needed.

“It has been over a decade since we spoke to the port administration about our clearance operations,” remembers Gerrit Braun, one of the two twin brothers who founded the Miniatur Wunderland a good 20 years ago. “This gave rise to the crazy idea with the bridge that leads small trains and people across the canal into a new world. The fact that this vision has now become reality still feels completely unreal to me and is just wonderful.”

After the bridge was built in summer 2020 from storage block D to storage block L on the other side of the fleet in the historic Hamburger Speicherstand, the exhibition area has grown by 3000 square meters – enough space for the next ten years.

On December 1st the first section could finally be inaugurated: Rio de Janeiro with the miniature worlds Copacabana, Corcovado, Lapa, Sugar Loaf, Santa Teresa, Manguinhos, Favela and Carnival. This required 60,000 working hours between November 2017 and December 2021.

The Rio section is the first of four South America parts that the miniature wonderland model builders are building together with the Martinez model building family in Argentina and Hamburg at the same time. A film about this unusual collaboration will be released in cinemas at the end of 2022, which will be produced by the makers of the globally successful Michael Schumacher documentary.

The further expansion plan provides: After Rio, the Patagonia and Antarctic sections will follow at the turn of the year 2022/2023, the rainforest with the Amazon and Andes in 2024, and the Caribbean in 2025.
