The Canadian director Sarah Polley asks for a “debate”, Gérard Depardieu plays a star chef in a crisis of identity, Channing Tatum pulls naked again, and a tomcat philosophizes about everything and everything.

“The Pronunciation” has been nominated for two Oscars, including for “Best Picture”. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy and Frances McDormand are among the outstanding cast. “The Debate” is an emotional film about the faith and (powerlessness) of women, only dealing with the conversations we witness. In the center is a group of women from a secluded religious community. They found that men from the community had been systematically drugging and raping them at night for years. For a long time, the women didn’t know what had happened when they woke up in the morning with injuries. Now they are discussing what their future should look like.

Depardieu as a star chef: Sour and salty, bitter and sweet

Actually, star chef Gabriel Carvin (Gérard Depardieu) has every reason to be happy: His noble restaurant receives the prestigious third star. But he doesn’t feel like celebrating. His wife Louise (Sandrine Bonnaire) is cheating on him with a restaurant critic. Shortly thereafter, he suffers a heart attack. After being discharged from the hospital, he decides to take his life back into his own hands: he flies to Japan to discover the secret of “umami”, the fifth sense of taste. His search also develops into a journey of self-discovery.

Channing Tatum returns as Magic Mike

The stripper cult film about Magic Mike enters a new round. Channing Tatum stars for the third time as dancer Mike Lane, who now works as a bartender and meets a wealthy socialite, played by Salma Hayek. She lures him to London with an offer for a big dance show. He gets involved – and soon realizes that his client is pursuing her very own agenda. Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh brought the stripper comedy “Magic Mike” to cinemas in 2012. The sequel Magic Mike XXL (2015) was directed by Gregory Jacobs, and now Soderbergh is back on board as director.

“Maurice the Cat”: Philosophical animated film

The animation strip is based on the novel of the same name by fantasy author Terry Pratchett. The story is told by Maurice, a talking tomcat. Together with a horde of rats, he wanders from place to place, performs pied piper tricks there – and earns a golden nose with it. First, the gang stages a plague of rats, from which they then free the respective villages for a fee. Everything runs like clockwork until the idiosyncratic team arrives in the picturesque village of Bad Blintz and finds out that their plan will probably not work out this time. What then follows in terms of plot and images is as fun as it is philosophical, as scary as it is entertaining.
