Jared Leto enters the Marvel Comics universe in an immensely somber manner. What is “Morbius” about and how is the bloodsucker to be assessed?

On March 31, the dark comic adaptation “Morbius” with Jared Leto (50) in the title role will be released in German cinemas. Instead of a hero in shining armor, Leto appears as a seriously ill scientist who mutates into a monster after an experiment that went wrong. As such, he must henceforth feed on human blood. How this fits into the MCU and with which other well-known characters Morbius most often gets into clinches or works together can be read here.

Bloodsuckers against their will – that’s what it’s all about

dr Morbius (Jared Leto), suffering from a dangerous blood disease, dares a desperate quest to help himself and the people who share his fate. What initially appears to be a fundamental success soon unleashes a dark abyss in Morbius. Will good override evil, or will Morbius succumb to his new inexplicable needs?

Hero, Antihero or Villain?

Morbius also appears in the comic template primarily in Spider-Man. And like other characters surrounding the friendly neighborhood Spider, his status is quite fluid. Hero, antihero or even villain? Similar to the extraterrestrial life form Venom from the film of the same name with Tom Hardy (44), this is sometimes not so easy to determine.

Which also, like in “Venom”, offers a lot of room for theatrical development – and for that Sony really could have done a worse role than Oscar winner Jared Leto. He is also known for his changeability away from supernatural stories. And he certainly wanted to prove that his unfortunate performance as the DC villain Joker in “Suicide Squad” isn’t what he wants to be measured against as a character in a comic book adaptation.

Speaking of bloodsuckers: A promising crossover is on the horizon for the future. Because at one point in the comics, Morbius becomes an ally of vampire and vampire hunter Blade. As is well known, he is scheduled for the fifth Marvel phase and is even embodied in it by a double Oscar winner – Mahershala Ali (48).
