New evacuation attempted by the police to empty the ZAD

New attempt. And according to activists, it would not have been completely successful. On Saturday, the authorities carried out a new operation to evacuate the ZAD installed in Saïx by opponents of the A69 motorway project. The Tarn prefecture had requested the intervention of the police to carry out this operation which took place “without incident”, according to the public administration.

Etienne Fauteux, activist from the Land Lab present on site, said that activists continue to occupy the premises. Several groups opposed to the construction of this road axis supposed to connect Toulouse and Castres have installed this ZAD (Zone to be defended) called de la Crémade. Eight people were arrested on Saturday.

People perched in trees

The anti-A69 collectives present on the ZAD denounced on Saturday a “provocation” by the public authorities and announced their intention to “rebuild”. The police returned on Sunday, assured Etienne Fauteux, but still without managing to clear the premises of the opponents. “We have between 10 and 20 people who are in the trees and who are ready to hold out as long as it takes,” he explained.

The ZAD had already been evacuated on October 22, but the opponents managed to resettle there. In the National Assembly, environmentalist deputies requested on Tuesday the opening of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into this controversial project.

Among them, MP Christine Arrighi, elected from Haute-Garonne, denounced on Tuesday on this occasion an “ecocidal scandal of a construction site which has no reason to exist, neither economic nor financial, and even less environmental”.
