Denis Villeneuve wrote down the first words for a script months ago, and he is now officially working on a third “Dune” film.

After “Dune: Part Two” recently performed well at the box office, the way is now clear for a third part of the sci-fi series. The production company Legendary Entertainment has confirmed that it is working on the development of “Dune 3” together with director Denis Villeneuve (56). That reports, among other things the industry magazine “Variety”.

“Dune: Part Two” has now grossed more than $630 million at the worldwide box office. This means that Villeneuve’s film clearly tops the list of the most successful films released so far this year in terms of box office revenue.

It is still unclear which acting stars around Timothée Chalamet (28) and Zendaya (27) will return. “Every time Denis calls, I answer ‘Yes’. I’m excited to see what happens,” the actress said in January in a conversation for “Fandango”.

What’s next for Denis Villeneuve?

It will probably be a while before the third “Dune” film hits theaters. Villeneuve had already written down the first words for the script in the summer of 2023, as he told “Empire” back then. But he also indicated that he might want to distance himself from the “Dune” universe first. He explained something similar to the film magazine: “I shot both films back to back, which makes perfect sense to me. I felt like it was a good idea to continue straight after the first part. […] But it also meant I was on Arrakis for six years straight, and I think it’s healthy to step back a little.”

One project that Villeneuve could squeeze in is “Nuclear War: A Scenario.” As “Variety” further reports, the director is currently in talks with Legendary about adapting the book by journalist Annie Jacobsen (56).
