With a new form of data collection, Netflix will provide more insights into its statistics in the future. This also changes the ranking of the top 10 lists.

So far, the streaming giant Netflix has kept a secret about the number of series viewed. But that should now come to an end. As Netflix announced in a statement, the calculation of the top 10 lists that have been published since mid-November will change in the future.

Netflix is changing statistics: Views instead of hours watched

Until now, Netflix has calculated the weekly lists based on the total viewing time of a series season (in hours) within a week. The combined viewing time for the first 28 days was then used for the overall list of the best. This was particularly beneficial for longer formats, which automatically have more broadcasting time – and thus tend to have more hours watched.

Regarding the change, Netflix said: “While we’re still showing hours watched per title, our top 10 lists are now sorted by views.” This means that the hours accessed are divided by the runtime and rounded, so that the average time accessed can be calculated for each season of each series. In addition, the long-term leaderboards will only appear every 91 days instead of every 28 days in order to give series a chance that only find viewers over time. This enables better comparability – but also changes the previous rankings.

“Squid Game” remains the undisputed winner

The fourth season of the series “Manifest”, which according to old calculations was still number 3 on the global list of the best, slipped to number 8 with only 2.8 million views. The streaming hit “Stranger Things”, the fourth season of which was number 1 on the English-language Netflix original with 13 hours, was knocked off the throne by “Wednesday”. Formats that were able to secure a place in the top 10 list thanks to the new statistics are “Das Damengambit” and “The Watcher”, highlights such as “Lucifer” and “Inventing Anna” were eliminated. Only the position of a series remains unchanged according to the new statistics: The South Korean series “Squid Game” is undisputedly number 1 in the international ranking in terms of viewing time and number of clicks.

The new calculation is particularly beneficial for shorter seasons and comedy formats that have previously failed due to their length and did not make it onto the leaderboards.
