New album: Diana Damrau sings operetta – Munich

Fritzi Massary didn’t tolerate water on stage, only champagne was put into her glass. She, the girl from Vienna, needed something authentic when she beguiled the audience as Grande Cocotte, Countess or Merry Widow in the opulent, glittering art world of operetta. Just like in 1932, the Berliners went wild with enthusiasm at the premiere of Oscar Straus’ “Manon” so much that the gallery in the Metropol Theater collapsed when Massary, with her unmistakable, not very large soubrette voice, glided from speaking to singing: “I “I’m a woman who knows what she wants.”
