Camera teams used to wait for hours for the perfect light. Now they are screwing together LED screens in Babelsberg, and sunsets are available at the click of a mouse. The question remains what that means for future productions. Visiting the film set of the Netflix series “1899”.

First of all, there is a heavy iron door that no one can pass without permission. The thing is six inches thick, probably weighs tons, it could withstand a bomb – and it comes from the prehistoric times of German film. Even the great Fritz Lang had to go through here in 1926 to yell at his extras at “Metropolis”, Marlene Dietrich floated by here when she was filming her “Blue Angel”. The draft when you open it smells of old dust. It has to be the breath of history.
