A wolf recently roamed a farm at night near Brannenburg in the Rosenheim district. A surveillance camera recorded how the predator walked past a machine shop. In the few seconds of short sequence that can be viewed on the Internet, the wolf makes a cautious impression. According to the State Office for the Environment (LfU), the film sequence is from November 9th. Although the wolf crossed the homestead directly, according to the LFU there is no danger to humans. Wolves are generally cautious and avoid people, said a spokesman. In densely populated cultural landscapes such as Bavaria, it still happens that wolves run past villages or cross scattered settlements. Since the animals are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal, this usually happens in the dark.
In Upper Bavaria it was noticeably quiet around the wolf all summer long. The last evidence comes from May from the Altmühltal near Eichstätt. At that time, the motto of the she-wolf was discovered there, who evidently migrated to the region from eastern Germany as early as the spring of 2020. In the Upper Bavarian mountains, however, there has only been evidence of wolves again since autumn. Several sheep cracks were reported at the end of October and beginning of November in the districts of Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land. According to a genetic test by the LfU, the wolf that killed them migrated from the south from the central Alps. It is quite possible that it is the same animal that has now been filmed at Brannenburg. Brannenburg and the district of Traunstein are only 40 kilometers apart as the crow flies – that’s not a route for a wolf. However, it is not possible to provide reliable evidence that it is the same wolf.
In the north of Bavaria, in the Rhön-Grabfeld district, a wolf also killed two goats and a sheep at the end of October. According to the genetic test, he comes from East Germany. A total of ten farm animals fell victim to the two wolves, and another seriously injured sheep had to be emergency killed. Experts assume that the current evidence and sightings are young animals that have left their parent pack and are looking for their own territory. Wolf cubs are born in May and migrate from their parent pack when they are one to two years old, males usually earlier than females.
