Nazi helmet and swastika advertising: Fake posts on the Ukraine war exposed

Watch the video: Nazi helmets, drone strikes and swastika advertising – you must not believe these war fakes.

The Ukraine war is being waged not only on the battlefield, but also on the internet.

Here, fake videos are repeatedly distributed via social networks.

In the video you can see current fake clips about the conflict, which you better not fall for.

1. This video intended to show Russian soldiers being hit by a drone strike is unrelated to the Ukraine war.

A reverse search reveals: The clip will be published on YouTube in October 2020 and thus before the start of the war in February 2022.

According to the video description, the drone footage comes from the war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

2. Another fake: This photo is supposed to show a Ukrainian soldier who wears the words “To each his own” on his helmet.

The slogan, which was written on the main gate of the Buchenwald Nazi concentration camp, is apparently intended to portray the Ukrainian soldier as a Nazi. A narrative that is repeatedly taken up in pro-Russian propaganda.

The lettering was later added to the image. The original comes from the Ukrainian band Antytila, whose band members volunteered as soldiers in March 2022.

3. This fake takes the same line: the picture is said to show a Ukrainian tattoo parlor advertising half-price swastika tattoo removal.

But the picture is manipulated and comes from Russia. The recording has been online since 2018 and shows a tattoo studio in the Russian city of Biysk. The address was digitally removed and the swastika advert added.

How do we check videos for manipulation in the editorial office? It is important to look at the details. The individual frames of a video often reveal whether a video has been edited. We take a close look at each image and enlarge individual sections. Indications of a fake are, for example: lack of motion blur, unnatural shadows or editing errors. The general rule at stern is: Seriousness before speed. We always double-check facts and material thoroughly before publishing them. For this we work with the cross-editorial “Team Verification” together with RTL, NTV, RTL2, Radio NRW.
