In the future, Mercedes-Benz will rely on Google for navigation services. The Stuttgart-based carmaker partnered with the US online service for its new MB.OS operating system, which allows customers to access Google services directly. Mercedes drivers can access traffic reports from Google and watch YouTube videos when the car is parked or driving autonomously. Mercedes boss Ola Källenius said Mercedes is the architect of its own operating system. “That means we determine every detail of how it is built. We also integrate leading technology partners to make it faster, bigger and more efficient.” Google and Mercedes-Benz also wanted to talk about further cooperation on the topics of Google Cloud and artificial intelligence, said a spokesman. The new operating system is expected to be launched in the middle of the decade. Mercedes-Benz retains full control over the customer relationship and the flow of data. “We are the owners of the system,” said Källenius. Mercedes-Benz expects additional income from its new operating system: By the end of the decade, this should amount to a high single-digit billion amount, it said.
