Nature conservation association looks for deadly threats to birds – Bavaria

Glass facades can pose a deadly danger to birds. The nature conservation association LBV has been recording which of these are particularly accident-prone since last autumn with the help of the public. Since then, around 40 reports have been received that a bird had hit a window, said a spokeswoman. Schools, noise barriers and factory halls proved to be the main accident areas.

According to the LBV, some of these facades have already been converted to be bird-friendly or there are plans to do so, for example at the University of Bayreuth, at the Erlangen University Hospital or at a gym in Oberasbach in Central Franconia. The LBV now recognizes flagship projects from municipalities, universities, schools, companies and public transport companies with a badge for bird-friendly glass surfaces.

But not all stickers and markings are effective, the experts emphasized on Monday. The widespread bird of prey silhouettes did not deter birds at all. The same applies to UV markings because many birds cannot see UV light. The LBV therefore recommends marking window fronts over the entire area with pattern films that birds can easily see.
