Müller hopes for a European Championship festival like 2006: “Absolutely magical”

Despite the national team’s crisis, Thomas Müller believes in a “magical” home European Championship. At the start of the year, the national player is also looking back on 2023 and his contract extension with FC Bayern.
He “would think it would be cool if we as a nation managed to look forward to this awesome football tournament in our own country,” wrote the 34-year-old FC Bayern Munich professional in his newsletter. “We have the chance to present ourselves as great hosts and to celebrate a really good football festival together.”
The 126-time national player also remembered the 2006 World Cup in Germany, which he experienced as a fan. “It was absolutely magical.” In terms of sport, the 2014 world champion sees the tournament in his own country as a great opportunity for the national team, which has recently been in crisis. “Maybe we can – like in 2006 – come into the tournament positively and then grow with the support of the German audience,” wrote the long-time Bundesliga professional.
Müller was recently part of the national team squad again under the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann, and he also extended his contract with FC Bayern shortly before Christmas until the end of June 2025. “For me it is now additionally liberating that my sporting future has already been clarified and I mean can put full focus on football,” Müller wrote.
The decision to want to play another year was made in the summer and fall. “I love competition and the will to win is just as strong as ever.” The Champions League final in Munich in 2025 is also a great motivation: “With the Bayern soul, it is a dream and also a realizable one.”
