After the world championship title in 2014, Jupp Heynckes could allegedly have taken over as the new national coach. However, Joachim Löw decided against resigning.

Jupp Heynckes was said to be ready to succeed Joachim Löw if he had announced his retirement after winning the 2014 World Cup. This is reported by “Sport Bild”.

Accordingly, the 76-year-old was the “emergency plan” of the then DFB association leadership around President Wolfgang Niersbach. The year before, Heynckes had won the treble with FC Bayern before being replaced by Pep Guardiola.

Jupp Heynckes should prevent a long search for a successor

According to the report, the DFB wanted to avoid a case like that after the EM 2004, when Rudi Völler resigned and a successor was sought for weeks. Eventually, Jürgen Klinsmann took over.

After the triumph in Rio, however, Löw decided to stay and only gave up his position after the 2021 European Championship. A former Bayern coach inherited the coach anyway: Hansi Flick.

Heynckes, on the other hand, remained without a job and hired a fourth time with the German record champions in autumn 2017 after Carlo Ancelotti had been fired. In 2018 he finally ended his coaching career.
