NASDAQ value Microsoft shares are still turning positive: British competition authorities are examining Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI

The British antitrust regulator is examining the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI.

The CMA announced on Friday that it is examining whether the US software company’s investments in the ChatGPT developer amount to a takeover. The companies were asked to submit statements. “There have been a number of developments in the leadership of OpenAI recently, in which Microsoft has also been involved,” emphasized the British authority. Because of these events, it is being investigated whether the collaboration should be viewed as a merger and what effects this would have on competition.

Microsoft President Brad Smith noted that he does not have voting rights on OpenAI’s board of directors. “This is significantly different from Google’s takeover of the AI specialist Deepmind.” However, all requested information will be provided. OpenAI could not immediately be reached for comment.

A few weeks ago, OpenAI unexpectedly fired its boss Sam Altman. He then moved to Microsoft before returning to his old position a few days later. Microsoft is a major shareholder in OpenAI. At the beginning of 2023, the group had significantly expanded its stake. According to previous media reports, he invested ten billion dollars in the artificial intelligence (AI) specialist, securing almost half of the shares.

In NASDAQ trading, Microsoft shares temporarily gained 0.7 percent to $373.55.
