Nantes unveils its “clear and readable” network of “long cycle routes”

In the boxes since 2021, the future large bicycle network of Nantes Métropole is moving up a gear. This Monday, the final route of its 220 km of masterful, “readable and secure” cycle paths was unveiled, as was the way they should be called. “The Great cycle routes will pass through the center of Nantes to the 24 municipalities, which will also be linked together, without falling into a star-shaped network”, explains Nicolas Martin, vice-president in charge of soft mobility. Mostly on their own site and one-way, they will all be operational by 2026, promises the community.

Ground markings will materialize future major cycle routes – J. Urbach

To “facilitate use”, the metropolis intends to put the package on the signage. “Like a bus plan, you will have your bike plan, with lines that will carry letters from A to I, continues Nicolas Martin. There will be major points, such as stations, which will mark out the routes in order to better find your way around. “Sober” green markings on the ground will materialize these cycle routes, some of which still need to be developed over the next three years (such as along Boulevard Dalby, for example, or between Rezé and Les Sorinières).

Two sections being tested from September

But within a fortnight, cyclists who connect the CHU to Malakoff, or the H Arena to the station (part of the new routes B and D) could see the new signage. And will be called upon, for two months, to submit their comments via the Naolib app, the brand which aims to bring together Nantes mobility operators.

According to the metropolis, 17% more cyclists were counted in July 2023, compared to last year. The modal share of cycling could have exceeded 8%, while the objective is to reach 12% in 2030.
