Nagasaki after the atomic bomb: archive footage shows destruction (video)

See the video: Nagasaki after the atomic bomb – archive footage shows destruction by nuclear weapon “Fat Man”.

Rubble and devastation as far as the eye can see.

On August 9, 1945, a US bomber dropped the “Fat Man” atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Nagasaki.

Three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the attack on Nagasaki is the second use of a nuclear weapon in a war.

At 11:02 a.m. local time, the nuclear weapon detonated at a height of around 500 meters over a densely populated area – around 22,000 people died immediately.

According to the city administration, the attack cost the lives of a total of 74,000 people.

Footage from the US National Archives shows the devastated city after the devastating explosion.

The power of the bomb is so great that the shadows of residents are burned into the sidewalk.

The atomic bomb was actually supposed to explode over Kokura, a center of the Japanese armaments industry during World War II. Due to poor visibility on several approaches to Kokura, the bomber pilot flew to the alternative destination of Nagasaki.

After the war the city is rebuilt. Some rubble still stands as a reminder in the city of 400,000.

Today, Hiroshima and Nagasaki stand as global memorials to the devastation and horror that followed the atomic weapons attacks of August 1945.
