“Myth of Flying” – a book by the stewardess Edeltraud Lioba Miller – Munich

Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy arrived as a pre-boarding passenger. Her name was on the first class list and the chief stewardess had already been informed of her presence in a briefing. The former First Lady of the USA walked slowly down the gangway at the side of her personal assistant. Her outfit: perfect, her voice: quiet. This is how Edeltraud Lioba Miller remembers the flight from New York to London in which she met Kennedy and was responsible for her well-being. “Mrs. Kennedy had on the B707 In order to maintain her privacy, she booked eight seats: two opposite her (between them was the middle aisle), two behind her, two in front of her and her own with a companion,” she writes in her book about her time as a stewardess at the Pan Am airline. Pan Am, short for Pan American World Airways, the glamor airline on which every meal was served with silverware and first class passengers could expect caviar and roast beef. At least that was the case when Miller worked on board, from 1968 to 1973.
