Mystical Bavaria: The Walberla – home of pagans, witches and demons – Bavaria

A fish lives in Walberla and bites its own tail. And right next to it the devil is dancing with a young woman. Stories like these and many more are told in Franconian Switzerland.

Walberla in Franconian Switzerland is a place steeped in fairy tales. Where people tell stories in which the breath of dead souls accumulates. Eustace Kern knows them all. And one of them goes like this: A woman wanted to go from Ortspitz to Leutenbach, down from the mountain, into the village. On the way there she saw that there was a light on in the small church of St. Moritz, in the otherwise quiet valley. She hadn’t expected this, but she decided to go to mass. She walked past the graves in the cemetery that encompasses the church and sat down in the packed church. She was shocked: the priest who held the mass had long since died. When she looked around: dead people everywhere – the neighbor, the godmother. A whole church full of long dead people.
