33-year-old Nang Mwe San from Myanmar has been jailed for six years for selling erotic photos online for money. The model had also spoken out against the military dictatorship in the country.

Nang Mwe San is considered the most famous model from Myanmar, she appears at fashion shows, but the 34-year-old also earns part of her money with revealing photos on the erotic platform OnlyFans. There fans pay to see their pictures. However, Nang Mwe San’s activities on the app have landed her in prison: a court in Myanmar has sentenced her to six years in prison for distributing nude photos for money, the BBC reports. The sentence was just under the maximum sentence of seven years.

Nang Mwe San was arrested by the junta in early August in the wake of the military coup in the Southeast Asian country. The model is said to be the first person from Myanmar to be convicted for content on OnlyFans. But it is likely that the verdict also had a political background: Nang Mwe San took part in demonstrations against the military rulers last year.

Myanmar firmly in the grip of the military dictatorship

The 33-year-old initially worked as a doctor before dedicating herself to her modeling career. Her medical license was revoked in 2019 because of her erotic photos, which Nang Mwe San called a violation of her human rights. After the military coup in Myanmar, martial law still applies in her hometown of Yangon. Like many other political prisoners, the model had to face charges without a defense attorney, reports the BBC. Her mother was allowed to have contact with her after her imprisonment, but only found out about the verdict from the media.

In February 2021, the military ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup in Myanmar. The former head of government was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison in several trials and is in solitary confinement. It is estimated that more than 15,600 people have been arrested for political reasons since the military coup in Myanmar.
