A court in Myanmar has once again found Suu Kyi, the de facto head of government who was ousted in 2021, guilty – this time of alleged election fraud. The Nobel Peace Prize winner received a further three years in prison.

The former de facto head of government of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been found guilty again in another court case. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was sentenced to three years in prison for alleged electoral fraud.

In addition to Suu Kyi, two senior members of her former government also had to appear in court. They also received a three-year prison sentence.

Suu Kyi has now been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison in several trials on various allegations. Most recently, a court found her guilty of corruption in mid-August and sentenced her to six years in prison. The 77-year-old has been in solitary confinement for several weeks.

Military junta in power since February 2021

Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party won the 2020 elections in Myanmar by a landslide – the military party lost. However, in February 2021, the military staged a coup, arrested Suu Kyi and seized power.

However, independent election observers had found no abnormalities in the 2020 election. The UN and human rights organizations also criticize the trials and prison sentences against Suu Kyi as politically motivated. The military has announced new elections in Myanmar for next year. Observers fear that opposition parties such as the NLD will be virtually sidelined beforehand.
