MVG: Ticket machines at tram and bus stops are largely disappearing – Munich

The purchase of tickets from the vending machines of the Munich Transport Company (MVG) is increasingly shifting to the vehicles. The machines at the tram and bus stops, on the other hand, are gradually disappearing. According to the MVG, last year it dismantled 16 ticket machines on the surface, and this year another 50 will follow. Twelve machines will initially remain, as will the devices in the underground stations.

The MVG wants to reduce its costs, as it has now announced. The machines that can be found in all buses and trams are cheaper to maintain. A stationary machine causes around three times the costs.

Modern devices are now installed in almost all vehicles, where you can buy the complete range of tickets, including weekly or monthly tickets, for example. Passengers can pay by EC card, credit card or smartphone, cash payment only works up to an amount of 20 euros.

In a few older trams, however, card payment is not yet possible: cash is still required here. Tickets from the mobile devices are issued already validated. When purchasing a stripe ticket, the machine also validates the number of strips required, which were previously specified on the touch screen.
