Anyone who regularly crosses the Reichenbachbrücke or Odeonsplatz will certainly have seen or heard of 21-year-old Sofia Lainovic. The young musician mostly writes melancholic songs that go in the direction of indie pop. “But when I perform live, I sound more like a singer-songwriter,” says Lainovic. When she performs, she is usually accompanied on the guitar, also by her brother.
Lainovic started writing his own songs at the age of eleven. At some point during her school days, with the support of Denise Müller – her math teacher at the time, now her manager – she came into contact with music producers, who recorded the song “Let the people talk” with her professionally in the studio. Today, the Munich native is studying German and social studies to become a teacher at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University. The goal, so to speak, is small: thanks to a university degree, to later have a secure footing. “But my big goal would be to make music full-time,” says Lainovic. She is still at the beginning of her musical career, so the corona pandemic was very inconvenient. In 2020 she released two EPs, most recently she was working on her own album.
At the online presentation of the Blattmacher competition, Lainovic created an atmosphere with her songs – and an audible change from the conversations about digital and printed newspaper pages. One of the rare opportunities to perform in these Corona times: the lack of cultural events does not make it easy for newcomers who are in the starting blocks to draw attention to themselves. At some point, Sofia Lainovic will again have the opportunity to be on stage regularly. Until then, she will continue to make Munich’s streets her stage. Anyone who is about to stroll across the Reichenbachbrücke or the Odeonsplatz should definitely prick up their ears.
