The Brit Awards aim to be “as inclusive and relevant as possible”. The focus should only be on the music.

The Brit Awards will only be given in gender-neutral categories in the coming year. Instead of a best female artist and a best male artist, there will only be a single category, according to a message on the Brit Award website.

The award should relate exclusively to the music and the work of the award winners, and not to how they identify themselves or how others see them, the message said. The show should be “as inclusive and relevant as possible”.

The award ceremony, which will also award prizes in the categories Alternative / Rock, Hip Hop / Grime / Rap, Dance Act and Pop / R & B for the first time, will take place on February 8, 2022. The Brit Awards, established in 1977, are considered the most important music prizes in the world alongside the Grammys.
