Two Ukrainians stabbed, Russian suspected: background to the crime remains unclear

Two Ukrainians are stabbed to death in the small town of Murnau. A short time later, a suspect is caught – a Russian. It is unclear whether the Russian war of aggression played a role.
Two men from Ukraine were killed on the premises of a shopping center in Murnau in Upper Bavaria. Shortly after the crime on Saturday evening, the police arrested a man who is considered a strong suspect. It is a 57-year-old Russian. The background to the crime is still completely unclear.
The man should be brought before the investigating judge on Sunday, as a spokesman for the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters said. The police did not initially clarify whether the three men knew each other and whether there was a dispute in connection with Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Ukrainians killed in Murnau: victims 23 and 36 years old
“The investigation is ongoing, but we still need some time,” the spokesman said on Sunday. According to police, the victims were two Ukrainian citizens, aged 23 and 36, who both lived in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. They died of stab wounds – the older of the two directly at the crime scene, the younger one a short time later in a hospital.
The crime occurred on Saturday afternoon around 5:15 p.m. in front of a grocery store, the spokesman said. The suspected perpetrator fled, but was quickly caught, according to police. The criminal police started an investigation on suspicion of double murder. “If it turns out that the background to the dispute was Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, it would be a catastrophe for the region,” said Free Voters parliamentary group leader Florian Streibl on Sunday. “It must not be the case that this conflict takes place here in the Oberland.”
