In a murder trial involving the death of a 38-year-old man, the defense has rejected all allegations. Before the Memmingen regional court on Tuesday, the defendant’s lawyer explained that there was no evidence of his client’s guilt in the circumstantial trial. In the trial, a 34-year-old woman with German and Syrian citizenship is accused of killing her husband by setting a fire.
In May last year, she is said to have planted a sleeping pill on him as a fertility-enhancing drug and, after its effects began, she set fire to individual objects in the apartment in Memmingen. The smoke that developed because of the smoldering fire is said to have killed the father of her five children.
On the first day of the trial, the defense attorney emphasized that he was assuming a tragic accident and not arson with an open fire. This is also suggested by a report that the defense itself said it commissioned. The fire was therefore caused without flame, for example by a smoldering object. This can be proven by the traces of fire.
He also does not see it as proven that the defendant was in the apartment when the fire occurred. The cell phone was logged into the appropriate radio mast. But it has an enormous reach. “The accusation collapses like a house of cards,” said the defense attorney.
The lawyer considers the defendant’s father to be more of a suspect. He is said to have had a difficult relationship with the victim. After he noticed the smoldering fire from his apartment nearby, he failed to call the fire department. He is also said to have deliberately kept the defendant away from her apartment by inviting her to dinner.
The public prosecutor accuses the woman of planning the murder of her husband and sees greed as the motive. As the heiress and beneficiary of several insurance policies, the woman tried to receive a total of 2.4 million euros. The defendant initially made no statement about the allegations. A further 23 days of trial are planned for the proceedings, and a verdict is expected at the end of August.
