In the future, Munich’s subways should also run at night on weekends – at least if the Greens have their way. Two years ago, at the request of the CSU and the Greens, the city council decided to have a corresponding concept developed, but the night subway has not yet been implemented. Now the Greens are submitting another proposal and want to introduce night traffic on weekends when the timetable changes in December 2024.
According to older calculations, nighttime operation should cost two million euros per year. The city should contribute this amount. The operation could then look like this: On the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday as well as on the nights before public holidays, the subway lines U1 to U6 should run every 30 minutes. The two lines should each run 15 minutes apart.
At the inner-city train stations Hauptbahnhof, Sendlinger Tor and Odeonsplatz, passengers will have access to connections to the other subway lines. In addition, the night tram network is to be expanded and the night bus network is to be adapted to the new subway night lines.
“Night owls, people on shift work, but also travelers benefit from this,” says Mayor Katrin Haben Schaden (Greens). “It’s simply not appropriate for a major international city like Munich to stop the most important means of transport at night.”
“The fact that Green-Red now wants to secure financing is good news,” says CSU city councilor Sebastian Schall. “In a big city, public transport should work around the clock.”
