Munich’s Gasteig dilemma: How can the renovation still succeed? – Munich

Munich’s large cultural center needs to be renewed. But the city cannot find an investor who will agree to its specifications. What enormous consequences this has – for the costs of the project and for the culture.

The Munich Gasteig prides itself on being Europe’s largest cultural center. Until October 2021, the Philharmoniker, the adult education center, the city library and the University of Music and Theater were housed here. Because the building constructed between 1978 and 1985 needs to be renovated, the institutions have now moved into temporary rooms, most of them on Hans-Preißinger-Strasse in Sendling. It has been clear since last week: the renovation will not happen any time soon. The city has not found an investor who wants to realize the plans for the upper limit of 450 million euros. The City Council will take up the issue again on Wednesday.
