Increasing costs, an outdated schedule and an insolvent architectural office: the construction work on Munich’s most famous museum has gotten out of hand. In the meantime, at least the first part has been renovated. An overview of the major project and its problems.

The German Museum in Munich is known all over the world, around 1.5 million people – including all branch museums – visit it every year. And yet the museum, which opened with great pomp in 1925, was neglected for a long time. It was not until 2011 that federal and state representatives signed the contract for the so-called future initiative. Since then it has been planned and built. It soon became clear: the planned money – 750 million euros – is not enough. The architectural office filed for bankruptcy, and a new one took over the planning. The schedule has long been obsolete.
