Munich: Why the old Gärtnerplatztheater rehearsal building has to go – Munich

Some people from Harlaching are wondering: Why is the Free State actually tearing down the decommissioned rehearsal building of the Gärtnerplatztheater in their neighborhood (Harthauser Straße 48) and building a new one for the Residenztheater elsewhere (Hohenlindener Straße 6) in Munich? The answer is probably in their interest: among other things, with consideration for the residents. Because what may sound absurd at first is easy to explain on closer inspection.

The Residenztheater, more precisely the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel with its three stages (Resi, Cuvilliestheater and Marstall), not only needed larger areas for rehearsals than the colleagues from the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. All of its workshops are also moving to the Steinhausen site. As a result, there will be a lot of truck traffic there in the future. In an industrial area right next to the autobahn, which also ideally connects the scenery warehouse in Poing with the city center location, such hype is much easier to cope with.

The Gärtnerplatztheater itself has been rehearsing in the center of Munich since the renovation of the historic building. That’s why the old, very simple rehearsal hall in Harlaching on the grounds of the Free State was no longer used. After various considerations for other uses, it was decided to build apartments for state employees on the site. They are also urgently needed in Munich.

According to information from the building authority, Stadiba will build a total of around 80 apartments on the property. The excavation pit is to be excavated by the end of 2023, with the building construction work expected to begin in mid-2024.
