Because of the energy crisis, electricity prices are rising everywhere in Germany – albeit at different rates. According to a report by daily News the price increases in Munich are particularly drastic. The parliamentary group The Left/The Party in the city council now wants to know by means of an inquiry why that is. Other energy suppliers, she argues, appear to have been better able to absorb fluctuations in wholesale prices. In the basic supply of SWM, a kilowatt hour will cost 61.9 cents from January, previously it was 25 cents. In Bremen it will be 36 cents, in Dortmund 43 cents and in Frankfurt 50 cents. Also in Nuremberg (47 cents), Regensburg (37 cents) and Cologne (55 cents) it is not as expensive as in Munich. Berlin (41 cents) and Hamburg (42 cents) will not adjust their prices until February 1st.
The increases are being mitigated in part, for example by the federal government’s electricity price brake. Nevertheless, questions arose, according to the left. For example, whether SWM shouldn’t also benefit from the high wholesale prices with its electricity generation plants – and why the prices for customers rose so much anyway. After all, SWM generated almost twice as much electricity as is consumed in Munich.
