Munich: What’s going on in dance in April and May? – Munich

Is this something like a battle between two choreographers? Between two creative places in Munich, the established Schwer Reiter and the new Bergson cultural power plant in the west of Munich? How important is competition in culture and dance? You could think about that and, with these questions in mind, go through the city to “2xGETANZT2024”, on April 22nd and 23rd at the Schwer Reiter and on April 24th at the Bergson.

The Arcis Collective presents an experimental dance concert format with special rules: Anna Konjetzky and Roberta Pisu each have only five days to develop a 20-minute choreography with the dancers David Cahier and Guido Badalamenti. Independently of each other, in their own individual style. The sound, a new composition, comes from the musicians of the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, who will also be part of the scenes. If the choreographers want to use props and costumes, they have to find them themselves.

Both pieces are performed one after the other so that the audience can make immediate comparisons. And in both the Bergson and the Schwer Reiter there will be moderated discussions afterwards with the two about their respective artistic decisions. The format that combines chamber music with contemporary dance has been around since 2022. Roberta Pisu is the constant, she is always looking for a co-choreographer.

Last year her partner was Matteo Carvone. The choreographer and former Gärtnerplatz dancer is now returning to the Munich stage with his dance performance “[Faun]”, which he presented for the first time in the Gasteig in 2019 and a year later also at the Venice Biennale dance festival. Faun and dance – the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky immediately springs to mind as he sang to Claude Debussy’s “L’après-midi” in 1912 d’un faune” which enraged the audience at the time with its animalistic presence. Matteo Carvone’s Faun wears a fur hat and moves on artificial turf; it will be available on May 15th, 16th and 17th in Hall X of the HP8. Previously, 25th. , April 28th, 30th and May 4th, he presents mini pop-up performances from his new piece “Centauri” at the “Am Kulturkraftwerk” square. It doesn’t cost anything, you can just watch it in bad weather in Hall E, the exact dates can be found below www.gasteig.de.

In the Schwer Reiter, in the Bergson, in the HP8, all of these dance events are also about looking at hyper-trained men’s bodies. But how does a body “make” masculinity, how do our ideas of masculinity shape the world in which we live? A woman asks these questions: The Australian dancer and choreographer Quindell Orton will premiere her solo piece “Making of a Man” on the stage at Hoch X (Entenbachstrasse 37) on May 2nd. The work, which combines movement, spoken word and sound, is part of the “Go drag! Munich” festival. For Quindell Orton, who also works extensively with her partner Anna Konjetzky, the body is “a porous, sentient entity” that is influenced by, and in turn influences, the environment and society. It’s worth thinking about.
