From theaters to museums to the Philharmoniker: Munich’s cultural budget will be affected by drastic austerity measures in 2022. What do the reduced grants for arts and culture in the city mean?

In principle, the formula sounds simple: spend less, earn more. Munich’s cultural advisor Anton Biebl recently presented the culture budget for 2022: 239.4 million euros are available for culture this year, including savings of 12.8 million euros and additional income of 1.8 million. As in 2021, the independent scene should be largely spared, but the savings in the larger institutions are reflected. How does this work?
