Culture does not have to take place in the opera house, in the theater hall or on a concert stage. As a rule, she only needs one thing: people who are inspired by her. And that, as the team from “Kultur im Block” knows, also works excellently on your own doorstep. Inspired by the backyard concerts that many people listened to from their balconies during the pandemic months, the idea came up in 2020 to work with local residents to transform courtyards, roof terraces, driveways or gardens into performance venues.
This year, Munich residents in Lochhausen-Langwied and Freiham should be able to enjoy the offer. “We are still looking for interested neighborhoods or households,” says Moritz Grebner. The dramaturge is one of the initiators of Kultur im Block and is planning this year’s events together with the district culture centers Freiham and Ubo 9 from Aubing.
Anyone who lives in these parts of the city and would like to experience a dance, theater, music or film evening with Munich artists in their own courtyard with their neighbors can first send an email to kulturimblock@quarterm by March 27 at the latest .de. After that, everything should move forward together: the neighbors decide for themselves which program they want to see, how the courtyard should be decorated, what there is to eat and drink. Kultur im Block and the cultural centers provide support with the organization and take care of the financing, technology and permits. Grebner emphasizes that “there are no costs” for the neighbors themselves. Thanks to support from the cultural department and donations.
