Munich: warning of flooding in the Isar – Munich

For a long time it didn’t rain at all – and then all the more violently: On Friday afternoon, the city of Munich issued a so-called flood warning from the Bavarian flood news service. The authorities strongly advise against bathing in the Isar or boating on the river as soon as the water becomes cloudy. There could be a significant danger to life and limb, warns the city’s climate and environmental protection department.

Basically, the following applies: During and after high water – recognizable by high water levels, strong currents and cloudy water – the Isar should not be navigated with boats. Exit points can be flooded, washed-up flotsam can damage boats and paddling requires a lot more strength. The risk of injury when swimming increases, the water quality decreases.

Even when the level drops again, the Isar is often cloudy, making it difficult to see dangerous spots under water. The flood news service provides information about the current water levels on the Internet at www.hnd.bayern.de/pegel/isar.
