Munich: VHS presents new rooms and program – Munich

For the Munich adult education center (MVHS) there are two innovations to present this time: the program for autumn and winter with around 9000 events – and the interim quarter at the Isarphilharmonie in Sendling during the renovation of the Gasteig. “The Munich adult education center has arrived in the HP8,” says management director Martin Ecker. “We’ve moved into a bit of a construction site, but it’s all going to be wonderful.” The cultural offer there can be combined very well with the offer of the MVHS.

All Munich residents are invited to the opening of the new location from October 6th to 9th. “We offer many taster offers from all areas, a very colorful program,” says Ecker. A total of 150 free courses and events are then on the program in HP8, including a panel discussion with former mayor Christian Ude and a lecture with a concert by Harald Lesch and the Munich Philharmonic.

The move into the HP8 is a further step in the expansion of the MVHS, which only reopened its location in Bogenhausen in 2021 and moved into a new building in Ramersdorf. In 2023, a district center will be added to the education campus in Riem. Other new locations are being planned, including in Freiham. However, the Corona period has not left the MVHS untouched either. Compared to autumn 2019, course registrations have fallen by 30 percent. At that time there were 270,000.

According to Jost, a general development can be seen here. “There is a trend that people no longer want anything fixed. Formats that last six months no longer work so well.” The period for which people want to commit to courses has become shorter and shorter. The offer will be adjusted accordingly: “Our lecturers are extremely flexible and the program has changed structurally. There are significantly more trial offers,” says Jost.

Overall, however, the number of different offers has not decreased. “Our program is as thick as ever, this year it’s 880 pages,” says Jost. A special focus is on the topics “Sustainable living” and the series of events “Racism in Germany – history, violence, counter-strategies”.

The catalog is available free of charge in all MVHS houses, the city libraries, the city information center in the town hall and in many bookstores or on the Internet at www.mvhs.de.
