Munich: TUM and LMU improve in global university ranking – Munich

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has been classified as the best German university in a global ranking for the ninth time in a row. In the “QS World University Rankings” of the British higher education service provider Quacquarelli Symonds, TUM came 37th and improved by twelve places compared to the previous year.

According to the ranking makers, it is one of the top 25 universities worldwide in five subjects – including 15th place in physics and astronomy and 18th place in electrical engineering, as reported by the TUM. In both engineering and natural sciences, it achieves rank 28.

The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) follows in the ranking as the second best German university in 54th place; it improves by five places compared to the previous year. The ranking is based on surveys in science and companies. It also includes how often studies are cited, how the supervisory relationship between teachers and students is assessed and how large the proportion of international employees and students is.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (USA) is the best university in the world. This is followed by the best European university in Cambridge, UK. After the two Munich universities in places 37 and 54, the next German university follows in 87th place, the University of Heidelberg.

At the “QS World University Ranking” there was criticism in the past. Among other things, the small samples in the surveys and the weighting of the individual factors were criticized. A study from the University of California at Berkeley recently suggested thisthat colleges that use Quacquarelli Symonds consulting services also perform better in the firm’s rankings.
