After a failed scam, the crooks are now a few thousand euros poorer than the chosen victim. A 66-year-old from Munich received a letter in July promising him a prize of 80,000 euros. Then a stranger called to say that the money could only be paid out when a four-digit amount for notary fees had been paid – the usual scam.
When the 66-year-old stated that he didn’t have that much money, the stranger suggested in a later call that he advance the alleged notary costs. In fact, the Munich resident received 2000 euros in his bank account shortly afterwards; he should transfer the money to a certain address in a money shop.
Instead, the 66-year-old went to the Neuhausen police station with the money and filed a complaint. The Kripo is now investigating not only because of an attempted fraud with the promise of profit, but also because of the suspicion of money laundering.
