Munich: Toddler stuck in the elevator for hours – Munich

Five people, including a two-year-old toddler, were stuck in an elevator at Munich Ostbahnhof for almost two hours. Those trapped called for help on Monday afternoon using the emergency call button installed in the elevator and thus reached the fire brigade, who immediately made their way to Orleansplatz in Haidhausen.

On site, the emergency services found that the elevator was stuck between two floors. A technician, it was initially said, was already on the way. The firefighters contacted the trapped people – two adults, two teenagers and a small child – and forcibly gained access to the machine room in order to get the car moving again from there.

But that didn’t work – more than an hour later, the emergency services finally opened the lift’s roof hatch to rescue the trapped people from above. But there they encountered another problem, an additional level of metal that they had to break open with a saw and angle grinder. Only after around two hours could all those trapped finally leave the elevator via a ladder. At this point, the announced technician had still not appeared. The elevator is now out of service until further notice, the fire department said. Why he got stuck is unclear.
