What is particularly nice in early summer – and of course on public holidays – is walking through the Munich Olympic Park. Munich in a nutshell, so to speak. Lots of nature, a beautiful lake, you can sit outside and have a shandy drink, and the rope nets of the world-famous Plexiglas roof that spans the various Olympic buildings are visible from practically everywhere. And that was a hallmark of Munich even before you were lucky enough to be able to live here.
You saw the Olympic Stadium regularly on TV, in the summaries of FC Bayern’s home games in the sports show. But especially during European Cup matches that were broadcast live, the camera always focused on the architecture, and the structure of the roof was unmistakable, like a watermark on the television images.
The fact that time sometimes stands still somewhere is of course a cliché at first, but it has a real core. The pylons in the stadium, from which the entire construction is suspended, are still painted and encased in Otl Aicher’s Olympic colors. When you see the floating silhouette of the stadium, you think of the sporting events that took place here, but you also think of the funeral service for the victims of the Olympic attack, often looked up in countless TV documentaries on the subject.
