Munich: The special wedding of a mentally handicapped couple – Munich

Christine Kammergruber and Thomas Bergmann got married. This would not have been possible for the two of them in the registry office, a law prohibits the marriage of mentally handicapped people. So there was a church wedding.

Christine Kammergruber strokes her chestnut-brown hair, which is tied tightly in a thin ponytail, with the palm of her hand. She listens, bowing her head low on her chest, crossing her hands in her lap. There is a wide gold ring on the right middle finger and a slightly narrower one on the ring finger. Christine Kammergruber ponders. Now she’s got it. The little woman looks up. “Everything is fine with Thomas. The whole body. I knew it right away. It’s my real Mo.” The 58-year-old sits in the shade of tall trees at a small, makeshift table. Behind her a plowed field. In front of her the house where she lives with 27 other people. Thomas Bergmann lives on the same floor as her, just two rooms down.
