Munich: the return of the white sausage – Munich

The city council had just voted for the second time in its general meeting at the beginning of March on the citizens’ initiative “Preserve green spaces”, the morning was already late. Then an almost hasty movement began, from the Great Council Chamber in the direction of the next room. What was happening? First of all, you have to know that this adjoining room is officially called the “committee room”, but is unofficially known in the town hall only as the “white sausage room”, although in recent years one crucial detail has been missing to do justice to the name: the white sausage.

The city councilors use the white sausage room for informal talks, small breaks or demonstrative time-outs when they are annoyed by the debates in the meeting room. In the white sausage room there is coffee, water, a basket with “organic pretzels” and one with “normal pretzels”. In the past, one hears, the cuisine here was much more sumptuous, there was Debreziner, goulash soup, potato soup and, of course, white sausage.

But at some point the white sausage disappeared from the white sausage room. The service was apparently no longer worthwhile for the providers. Until now, the FDP took the initiative and campaigned in the Council of Elders for the return of the Weißwurst at plenary meetings of the city council. Those who have been there for a long time have always raved about how nice it was back then.

The idea was well received. It was quickly agreed that a vegetarian alternative was needed. The question of whether this should consist of a vegan white sausage, as was offered for the first time at the Oktoberfest last year, reportedly led to extensive debates in the Council of Elders. In the end, it was said to have been the vegetarians who spoke out against the vegan sausage. And so, at the premiere at the beginning of March, sandwiches with avocado were served in addition to veal sausages and Viennese sausages.

The second general meeting with Weißwurst on Wednesday also showed that the Weißwurstzimmer had become even more popular thanks to the culinary upgrade. However, it is initially only a pilot project. Will it always be about the sausage in the future? It cannot be ruled out that a feasibility study will be decided on in the near future.
