Munich: Taxi driver saves senior from fraudster – Munich

It is thanks to an attentive taxi driver that an elderly woman from Munich did not fall victim to a so-called shock call. An unknown fraudster called the more than 90-year-old woman in Giesing on Monday afternoon and claimed that her daughter was involved in a fatal accident and had to pay tens of thousands of euros bail in order not to go to jail. In order to withdraw the requested amount from her bank, the elderly woman called a taxi. During the drive, she told the story, whereupon the 44-year-old taxi driver pricked up his ears and convinced the woman to stop by the nearest police station first. The over 90-year-old then filed a complaint there.

In a similar case, an older woman from Maxvorstadt did not get off so well. She had been told the same story on the phone around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and handed cash and gold coins worth a low five-digit sum to an unknown person picking him up at the apartment door. Only when she had doubts did she call the police.

On the same day, a bank employee in Aying reported to the police that an over 80-year-old customer was repeatedly trying to transfer a large amount of money to Lithuania. As it turned out during the investigation, the bank had repeatedly withheld payments from the woman, who wanted to make them under pressure from as yet unknown perpetrators. Only once did a transfer of around 20,000 euros go through.
