Munich: State Painting Collections buy photography – Munich

The Bavarian State Painting Collections have acquired selected items from the Düsseldorf School of Photography from the collection of the Munich publisher Lothar Schirmer. It consists of 55 works from the period 1982 to 2011 with a focus on the 1990s. This includes works such as colored large formats by Thomas Struth through to black and white small formats by Petra Wunderlich. In addition to numerous individual works, the acquisition also includes entire series of works such as those by Simone Nieweg. In this way, the State Painting Collections are closing gaps in their collections in the field of photography after 1980 and are showing the entire creative spectrum of the Becher students, as the head of the collection, Franziska Kunze, emphasized. Schirmer maintained and maintains close relationships with the artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher and with young talented photographers who represent the “Becher School”.
