Munich: Stadtsparkasse examines new building at Leonrodplatz – Munich

The bank building on Leonrodplatz, where retailers also have their shops, is in need of renovation. Whether it will be demolished, repaired or increased is still an open question.

Much is changing at Leonrodplatz. The new criminal justice center is being built on one side of the busy traffic junction in Neuhausen. Opposite is the creative quarter, this area is also a haven for change. A third building site could now open up on the southern corner, which is characterized by shops.

The Stadtsparkasse is the owner of the L-shaped row of shops at Leonrodplatz 1 and 2 with retailers on the ground floor and commercial use on the first floor. Because the building is in need of renovation, the bank is currently examining the building permit. However, it is still “open”, says company spokesman Sebastian Sippel, “whether our building will be demolished and rebuilt, renovated or increased”.

With a new building, he explains, some general conditions would definitely improve. “For example, retail deliveries would no longer have to be made via the inner courtyard. There would be more parking spaces for customers and tenants. And a modern and sustainable heating system could be installed.” Regardless of the solution, the Stadtsparkasse branch will definitely remain. And some commercial tenants, says Sippel, whose leases expired at the end of 2024, have already expressed an interest in staying in the location.

So far, the planning is at the very beginning, the local building commission has not yet received a preliminary decision or a building application. “A possible start of construction,” says Sippel, “is scheduled for 2025 at the earliest.”
