A “blooming oasis” is to be created around St. Mark’s Church from March. With this idea, the community is taking up the city’s plans: In October 2022, the city council decided to redesign the area at the western entrance to the old town tunnel. Instead of being stranded in the eight-lane car lane, people will in future stroll along a boulevard to the museums. According to the planning, the new face of the district will be ready by 2026.
The conversion should now also be an opportunity for the deanery church. “So far, many people have not really noticed St. Markus on the Altstadtring,” says Pastor Olaf Stegmann. As a result of the new design, the church, as an “important landmark”, now has a connection to the district and to the art area with the Pinakotheken and the Brandhorst Museum. The Fauth landscape office, which was commissioned with the redesign, wants to give the church garden a new look as early as March. You want to provide habitat for many animal species. Insect hotels and nesting sites are just as much part of the concept as seating that strollers can move according to their preferences. 40 percent of the area in the inner courtyard is to be unsealed.
50,000 euros are estimated. The municipality advertises for supporters with various sponsorships for perennials, grasses or benches. A small area for sculptural art is also to be created, which will be used in cooperation with the Pinakotheken.
