Munich is to become a model municipality for cannabis. This was requested by the green-red town hall coalition. Accordingly, the city should apply for one of the model projects planned by the federal government for the controlled dispensing of the drug. Adults should then be able to buy cannabis in licensed shops. According to the application, this step is intended to decriminalize consumers. The legalization is also expected to relieve the burden on the police and public prosecutor’s office.
The coalition also wants to involve the population: the city administration is to use a survey to determine needs. The aim is to further develop the information and help offers on cannabis consumption. Consumers and young people in particular should be protected as best as possible. “Countries like Canada have shown that the controlled and legal sale of cannabis offers numerous advantages,” said SPD city councilor Lena Odell. The Munich Jusos had previously demanded that Munich apply for one of the model projects.
