The Munich police are once again recording a peak in so-called shock calls. This week alone there was damage of more than 200,000 euros. Police headquarters reported two cases on Thursday.
In the first case, a 56-year-old woman from Oberhaching received a call claiming that her son had caused a traffic accident with a fatality – now a deposit of 150,000 euros had to be paid so that he could avoid a prison sentence. When the woman said she didn’t have that much money at her disposal, she was passed on to an alleged prosecutor who negotiated with her about the amount of the alleged bail. Finally, she handed over cash and jewelry worth around 10,000 euros to a woman at Frauenplatz.
In the second case, an 84-year-old man from Neuperlach received a call. He was told that his daughter-in-law had caused an accident so that he would have to pay tens of thousands of euros so that she wouldn’t go to prison. The man ultimately handed over cash, gold bars and jewelry worth around 30,000 euros at his apartment door. The fraud was only discovered when he told his daughter, who then called the police.
