Munich: Security Conference under new leadership – Munich

The former foreign policy advisor to Chancellor Angela Merkel, Christoph Heusgen, will take over the management from Wolfgang Ischinger.

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) will be under new leadership from next year. The previous chairman Wolfgang Ischinger, 75, is handing over the leadership of the renowned conference to the former diplomat Christoph Heusgen, 66 after twelve years. Consultant Horst Teltschik their fourth chairman.

Heusgen was the foreign and security policy advisor to Chancellor Angela Merkel from 2005 to 2017 and thus played a key role in shaping her international policy. He then served as the German ambassador to the United Nations in New York. Ischinger remains active as president of the “Munich Security Policy Foundation”. The German diplomat and Secretary General of the OSCE, Helga Schmidt, was elected as his deputy.
